JUNE 2005

H I G H L I G H T S O F T H E
M A Y , 2005 M E E T I N G,

Welcome to three guests, Mila, Cynthia and Maureen. We look forward to seeing you again in June.

April’s Assigned Subject Contest Entries were viewed and entries for the May Contest, the One Minute, were handed to our Contest Chair, Jean for judging. In June, we’ll view these entries.

Other Contests are currently open to our members ..

  • CIAFF (Canadian International)
  • TEN BEST OF THE WEST (Western Canada and US)
Our Club is hosting this contest again .
  • AMMA (American International)
  • AMPS (American international)

The recent workshop on DVD Recorders led by Mike at Margaret’s home was received with applause and we note the strong continuing interest among members who are eager to deploy this advantageous means of storing videos.

As a follow-up, Dave is offering to conduct a workshop on the Casablanca Prestige DVD editor and DVD burner at his house in Nanaimo, at a time most suitable to interested members. A whole day at it.

Through Morris’ gracious willingness to be the “subject”, at the May meeting we put on a demonstration on how to video a person’s orally delivered memoirs. Passing Along a Video Legacy to Family . Room light, on-camera mike, interviewer behind the camera…. Ambient “noises” chiming in from down the Meeting Hall . What we caught proved acceptable and relatively easy to capture, but any of us could deal with the tasks of better lighting and “up-close” audio .

Possible Club “Shoots” include a re-shoot of The Tramp, and a more demanding shoot of a narrative script, Gin and Tonic .

Celebration 2005, a DVD compilation of Club members’ contest entries made over recent years and archived by Dave was completed for the May Meeting.

Copies were made available to guests as “samplers”. (Vancouver Club proposes selling their first Club compilation – 2004-2005 for $10 a copy, incidentally). Mike produced DVD copies and composed excellently designed DVD cases.

A reminder to those who have the time and desire .. The Big Convention Cruise 2005 is taking place in early September, out of Vancouver heading to Alaska .. This is the major event for all North American Amateur video makers. In 2004, our Club hosted it in Victoria.. In 2005, you have the opportunity to view all of the award winning entries from four major amateur contests … and view the scenery outdoors at other times.

Movies from Down Under . Our sister club in Sydney, presented a window into their movie-making endeavors with Me & My Dad, a multi-awardwinning narrative. Thanks, mates.

Feeding Frenzy, produced as a “One Minute” entry for Convention 2004, brought howls of laughter from our audience at the Meeting. A neat “ender” for May’s Meeting.

Thanks, once more, to Glen & family for keeping the coffee pot boiled and the “Lucky Draw” raffle boiling along also. And appreciation to Eleanor for keeping the accounts for the Club.

PITCHING IN:

A reminder ….. the Club needs members to take a turn as “Office-Bearers” and participating in The Club Executive. To spell it out - “ responsibility “ is the word. All of us need people who’ll make sure that “things get done” and not leave it all to “others .”.

Now is the time for all good people to have the quick brown fox jump, and come to aid of the Party.

Your humble scribe

Dave
